Academic Bio

Kent Bausman is a professor of sociology. He has been an instructor in higher education for more than 25 years, many of which he has spent at Maryville University. Bausman’s thought leadership is concentrated on looking at the sociology of crime and behavior, as well as at the intersection of inequality that occurs socially and economically. His research has laid the foundation for legislative initiatives including indigent defense/public defense reform.

Bausman seeks to understand how a variety of factors including racial, ethnic, and generational differences impact the incidence of inequality and crime in our society. Numerous media outlets have invited Bausman to lend his expertise on inequality trends and patterns in the public eye. He has spoken on many topics, including mass shootings, hot-spot policing, child abductions, and gang violence. Driven by constant curiosity, Bausman is well positioned to offer cultural commentary on a variety of hot topics like white nationalism, poverty in rural America, media’s impact on society, and generational implications for education.
